Beware Replay

The other day I sat down to play on some old school 007 Golden Eye. Revered as one of the most amazing First person shooters dare I say EVER!. We all remember all the hours we spent playing that game. I figured I would practice till the one on Wii came out in the near future. Dear Lord to say the past lives in our memories as so much better is an understatement. Going from playing Call of Duty :MW2 and Halo: Reach to 007 was like going from a LAN line to dial up.

I remembered that game in my head with the same graphics I played it at. When it came out it was top notch graphics and I had always remembered it as such. To my surprise the controls were insanely hard to master again. I'm still trying to figure out how I did it the first time. The X-box and Wii controllers are far more advanced for first person shooters. I still don't like how the PS3 is set up. Just saying! Aiming is a bitch and as far as the graphics go. Well lets just say they aren't up to par with what I remember them to be. The thing is, this as many games from the past is not easily played because of our expectations for games these days.

However, Mario, Mega Man, Castlevania, and Kirby... all these old school side strollers we still play and love dearly. How can this be? Games from the dawn of consoles can be so much easier played than the older first person shooters. Pong, Tetris, and Frogger all still get played all the time. It's because at their time we loved those Graphics heavy games for the graphics. Where as games like sonic, Mario, and Zelda weren't ever really about the graphics and were more about the stories and replay value. I can still go back and play and enjoy a game of Spyro or Crash Bandicoot. Trying to go back and play Vigilante 8, Perfect Dark, or Turok is just a pain in my eyes. Even games like Final Fantasy 7, one of the greatest RPG's; going back and playing that its just hard after seeing how amazing the final fantasy series can be. Sure, if they remade that whole game with graphics like 13 it would be amazing.

I will never be able to play those games with the same awe and wonder as I had when I first watched some of those cut scenes. In fact if I go back and play them I'll lose that original awe and wonder I had locked away in my childhood memories. You'll find most of the games that we can replay have more cartoon like characters very bold designs and flat colors that pop out. That's why it's so much easier to play old school Street Fighter than it is to play old school Tekken. I would rather play the original Mortal Kombat over the 3D version of the game that came out after Mortal Kombat 3. So unless a game was a side scroller or a game that wasn't really based around graphics. I would highly recommend not going back and playing it again. It will ruin the place in your mind that remembers it as one of those games that awed you and shocked you with how delightful the new and astounding graphics were.
