#NerdsUnite: 35 and single - now what? (every day I'm hustling)

<editorsnote> Nerds, meet by buddy Jeff. We met on twitter a little while back, and then over Christmas I helped him revamp his OKC profile. He's now here to talk to you about his life outside of the programming world. I only have one more thing left to say ... HIT IT JEFF!!! </editorsnote>

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @Jtwebman

This week I wanted to talk about something Jen Friel said on twitter this week. She had gone to New York for a quick trip and was back in LA a few days later. Here is the conversation we had over Twitter:

Notice the hash tag she used #hustlehard. It really got me thinking and looking at a bunch of people that are successful in life or at least what I see as successful. It also made me think back over all those Robert Kiyosaki, Donald Trump and other business success books and one huge thing I had missed was they all worked hard “Hustle” everyday.

They don’t tend to watch much TV or play games or goof off on social networks. They had there goals and they worked 24/7 to get to those goals. It’s not just in business ether. Talk to any band, or any blogger, or any YouTuber and you will notice they work hard all the time to get where they are. Jen even covered it this week in her blog post on getting sponsors.

I think this is way different then most people think. I think most people, and I did at one point, think you can become successful in a job working 40-50 hours a week. It’s what we were taught in school including all the way through college. We are taught to do our time and get our pay raises and move into management. We are taught that going out on our own is risky, how will you get health insurance, 401k retirement plans, a steady paycheck, etc...

I now understand that it’s just not the truth. To be successful you are going to have to work a lot more. You are going to have to always be hustling so make sure it’s something you can lose yourself in. You are going to have to take risks and learn from your mistakes.

Now there are hundreds of books written on this so I’ll stop there. Just know that no one has become successful by being average or following the crowed.

After having this realization I had to take a serous look at what I am doing daily and what would be considered hustling vs. wasting time. So I made a list of the things I tend to do daily that are time wasters:

  1. Play Facebook and or Google+ games
  2. Watch YouTube videos - Only because I watch a few hours a day like TV.
  3. Twitter - I am totally addicted to twitter and spend way to much time on it though I do get work done on it too which makes it even harder to filter.
  4. Watch TV shows on Hulu or Netflix
  5. Watch Movies

So after taking a real look at what I do I figured I waste at least 5 to 6 hours a day and even more on the weekends. Now I know I will need some down time but I don’t think I need it daily. Most of the time I do these things because I am procrastinating. So this is step 1, admitting to procrastination.

Now I need to figure out how to stop doing some of those things listed above and use that time to hustle more. So that is the next step and what I plan on working this week to figure out. If you have any tips feel free to leave a comment below or tweet me.

Thanks Jen for opening my eyes!

With that I leave you with this funny song about just that!

Editors note: It's not just about spending hours and hours doing something (although yes, you will get better at anything the more you practice); it is about finding your bliss. Every. single. day. I walk in joy and in bliss because this site resonates so deeply in my soul. Working on this site is like breathing to me - I can't imagine not doing it, and it is CRUCIAL to my bliss. I've done a lot of self work in the last two years focusing on myself and figuring out who I am, what I want, what I'm afraid of. All I am doing is documenting it now. You already have the answers to every question you will ever want to ask, it is your job to turn inward and to listen to that voice letting it guide you. I work hella hard on this site, but again, it's not a "job" to me - its my everything. First step in finding your bliss is addressing your fears. That was the VEERRRYYYYY first thing I did before I went on my journey. For me it was skydiving, my biggest fear - by going it opened up another layer to my noggin, and lead me down the rabbit hole that now is my life.

Start with fear ... it is a stumbling block and will only impede your success (whatever that means to you).

Here is the face of my fear ...

Rock on!
