There's Nothing Wrong With Television
There’s nothing wrong with TV sets
With watching television hits
With watching when your day is done,
And all you want’s a little fun
If you say “bah!” to televis
And tell your friends, “the problem is”
“The television people watch”
“For any bit is much too much.”
Then sir, a question just for thee:
Just how pretentious can you be?
Just how do you presume to say
That TV has no place today?
There really is just nothing worse
Than all those people on high horse
Who pucker up their lips and say”
“I have no TV, anyway.”
They wear it like a badge of pride,
They use it so they can deride,
Their friends, or people on the street
Or anybody that they meet.
“I have no television set.”
“I’m better than you, don’t forget”
“Go watch your TV, bourgeois fool,”
“That TV set’s the Devil’s tool.”
And is it really TV shows,
Which courses anger to their toes?
Or is it maybe something more:
IT MAKES THEM FEEL SUPERIOR
There’s so much good on that TV
Both drama, yes, and comedy
And mini-series, histories
Accessible to all who please
And television has the chance
To go where film can’t always dance
To tell a story, full and true
Which sometimes takes a year or two
Now TV addicts, don’t cheer yet
There’s something you must not forget:
Though television has its place,
It’s just one runner in the race
And just as good, and just as great,
ARE BOOKS: THEY ARE NOT SECOND-RATE
Please don’t forget the wondrous might
Of reading late into the night
For even worse than all those tools
Who say that TV is for fools,
Are those who say “Well I don’t read.”
“I never really saw the need.”
You never really saw the need?
To learn, to laugh, by God to READ?
Turn off the set, pick up a book,
You need to do more than just LOOK.
So really, what one needs to say,
Is why throw either joy away?
Why rid your life of either one?
When both are crucial, great and fun
