#NerdsUnite: I just graduated college!! But um, now what? (Your Professors Aren't Always Right)

<editorsnote> Nerds, meet my buddy Megan. She recently just graduated from SDSU and is now entering the world with a fresh pair of eyes in a stinky economy. In these series of posts she will discuss her thoughts and discoveries as she ventures out into the real world. Hit it Meg!!! </editorsnote>

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @MegCorbs

Let me start this post by saying that I had some of THE best professors out there (I'm looking at you Prof. @noahax!). They inspired me and gave me the confidence to go out and achieve my dreams (super cheesy but the truth).

This post though is about the professors, two in particular, that try to discourage you. It's sad but they are out there (few and far between). Granted you never know what they see or what is going on in their life. I'm not trying to call ANYONE out with this but to tell college kids that may be dealing with the same thing, to not let it get to you.

We tend to listen more to the negative comments than the positive and those are the ones that stick with us. I'm here to tell you not to!

Now on to my stories.

My Freshmen year of college I was in a remedial math class. Yup I'm THAT kid. I pretty much suck HORRIBLY at math. I can knock out a 10 page term paper like it's nobody's business but put a simple math problem in front of me and I'll stare blankly at it for hours. I swear my brain just shuts off when it comes to math.

Well anyways this Prof was kind of a douche to say the least. He would pick on his students mercilessly. At the time I wasn't as confident as I am now so I barely spoke in the class but that didn't stop him from saying rude comments left and right.

The day of our first big exam he starts handing out the tests and says OUT LOUD to EVERYONE, "Megan, I know you are going to fail this test because you never pay attention in class."

First, I ALWAYS paid attention in class just didn't ever want to answer a question because he would mock you if you got it wrong. Second, WTF way to boost my confidence before a big test.

Thankfully, I am one of those girls that get's off on people telling me that I can't do something. To this day I have NO idea how but I ended up getting the highest grade in the class on that test.

Oh satisfaction how you taste so sweet.

The best (worst?) part of this story was that when the semester was ending the prof went on www.ratemyprofessor.com (a VERY popular website where students anonymously rate professors and their classes) and saw all the negative reviews. He went INSANE and emailed the class scolding us for writing such things. He then proceeded to email me personally asking if I would write him a nice review. Instead of being a bitch I just didn't respond. But SERIOUSLY though? You made fun of me the most and now you want me to say something nice about you?

Needless to say I believe he got fired shortly after.

Next up was my Writing and Rhetoric Studies class my last semester of college. This basically taught you the right things you need to put into your written argument to make it valid.

The paper topics were kinda blah but whatever, like I said before I could bust out a paper no problem and rarely, if ever, got below a B (sorry for the braggy moment).

Well this Prof tore my papers apart. Not because they were bad but because they needed to be EXACTLY what he would do and say. I HATE that when it comes to writing. If you follow what needs to be in the paper than there should be some wiggle room for everything else. Everyone has different writing styles and ways to express themselves. It's not a like a math problem with just ONE right answer.

Anyways, our last paper was to write a grad school admissions essay. I knew I wasn't going to go to grad school (which he scoffed at me for) because for what I want to do (social media) you just need to get a degree (if that) and then be in the field ASAP.

I wrote the essay for a PR grad school and his one-on-one with me about it was horrible. He told me I did not write well enough to be in PR. Which at that point I was in an internship at a PR firm where they were sending out my pitches and press releases without having to change a word.

But once again I bit my tongue because though I know I am not the best writer in the world (or even close), I love expressing myself through writing and I won't let anyone take that away from me.

One of my favorite saying is "Don't be BITTER be BETTER." So PLEASE remember that when someone tries to take you down a peg and remember what the kickass profs tell you, they are obviously the right ones!
