A Potential Job and a Without Wax Thank You

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @thtrnerd221

Dear Jen,

As I'm sitting here trying to compose this post, I realized that I'm at a point in my life where all of my recent social media obsession may start to all be worth it. There's a little bit of story behind this post.

Freshman year of college. First semester. I wrote for the campus newspaper. My professor was pushing blogging and social media as a way that you may be able to get jobs in the future.

So, just after we returned from winter break, the insanity started. I started a blog in January, which currently has over 1000 views and started to use Twitter constantly. (Click here for a link to my blog)

I wrote again for the newspaper second semester. This time I was one of two people that blogged and used twitter as a networking tool. I feel really bad for the rest of my classmates because someone who I follow and chat with constantly on twitter writes for you and told me about this awesomely great oppourtunity.

So where am I going with this? Great question. Well, I recieved an e-mail from the career services office on campus saying that there was an opening for a communication and media internship. Look at the description:

Title:  Communication and Media Intern

- Assist office staff with various communication, public relations, and media resources

- Create content for office facebook page and blog

- Assist with marketing and promotion of Career Services programs and events

- Manage email communication to students about programs and events

- Research current career and employment topics and create avenues to distribute this information to students.

Qualifications:

- Strong oral and written communication skills

- Ability to work independently

- Problem Solver

- Motivated and willing to take initiative

- Understanding and use of current social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

After reading the job discription, I about peed my pants. I got really excited. I fit the description perfectly. I would about die for this job.

Now, the nerves have begun. This is the first job that I have had to submit a cover letter and a resume for. I have no clue what I am doing. Thank God that my mother was able to help me out.

Anyways, I happened to read your latest post and it got me thinking. Maybe you aren't where you expected to be at this point in your life. Maybe there is a lot of uncertainty in your future, whether it's with the site or with the movie. I feel like your "Now I've made it" moment is still coming.

I know this for certain. You've opened up a door for me. I'm sure that you will open up more for me in the future. If I land this job, I will owe a lot to you.

Now, I take a moment to say thanks. I can't begin to tell you what your sacrifice means to me. Blogging/vlogging would be something that I would see myself being happy to do for the rest of my life. Thank you for giving me the place to find my voice.

So though you don't understand why you are being congratulated, I have to say congratulations. You have so much to be proud of. You have found a lot of sucess.  You haven't had that "moment" yet, it's comming. I hope sooner than you expect.

Without wax,

Brooke aka Nerd

PS Just got done reading Dan Brown's Digital Fortress (good nerdy reading) and felt like being a nerd. Without wax has ancient orgins. Spainish scluptors would use wax-Cera-to fix their mistakes in expesive marble. Scluptures without mistakes were called "sculpture sin cera" (without wax). Eventually, the phrase was used to mean anything honest or true. That's where we get the English word sincerely.
