#Review: Pirate Club Issue 8

Pirate Club sounds like something freaking awesome, and I think I’d like to be a part of it. I bought a grab bag of comics at the slave labor booth and found Pirate Club Issue #8. I’ve never read the comic before, so it probably wasn’t a good idea to start with anything but #1, but I feel like I’m not lost or confused despite the fact. That’s why I’ve decided to review it.

The comic opens with a fight over “territory” (why, I don’t know, but I didn’t really question it, it works!). Soon, the Pirate Club kids are conspiring to kill Santa. Why? He’s a twisted old man set on world domination and brainwashing. The kids find out that the “toughest Pirate in Sycamore Valley” lost his hand not in a Pirating accident, but rather in the escape from Santa. When he decides to head out to stop end the joy-bringer’s reign, the kids naturally follow. Things are fine until the gang runs into a crew of robotic reindeer bent on destroying them. Bearclaw (the hooded kid with wings on his head) takes control of the “ceiling cannon” and shoots a few of them out of the sky, but can’t quite pull it off. The gang is forced to eject the craft and face a crash landing. The last page shows Bearclaw waking up alone, laying in the snow, looking for the rest of his crew.

I think what makes this comic so entertaining is that a childhood figure- one that BILLIONS of kids are made to love- is made to be a “bad guy”. He murders all of his reindeer (to prevent elves from escaping), brainwashes people into becoming his slaves, and tries to kill babies (you’ll have to read to find out what the hell I’m talking about!). We have a HOLIDAY centered around this man and everything he stands for! He’s beloved by people everywhere!

I think I’ll boycott next Christmas! But I will give evil-Santa this: Those robotic reindeer are pretty kick ass! I would love to be able to ride something that could shoot fire/lasers/bombs out of its face! I think it would clear the lines pretty anywhere. Maybe I’ll add it to my wish list and Santa will bring it for me. Crap… So, ratings: Creativity of Writing: I’ll give it a 5/5. To manipulate people’s feelings about something they’ve loved their entire life- awesome. Making a good guy into a bad guy- pretty sweet! I want a flying vehicle with a cannon on top! GOODBYE, TRAFFIC! Creativity of Art: I think a 3.5 or 4 out of 5. It might be the artist in me coming out. The solid blacks and whites aren’t really my thing but the character design is pretty cool. There’s enough detail that it counts as detail and each character DEFINITELY has his or her own look. Casual Read Rating: 4 out of 5. It’s very entertaining and unpredictable.
