#Review: Impaler Issue #1

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @ashleighmayes

I went to bed last night fearing a gold-seeking little man (my sister made me watch Leprechaun 2 AND I’m the biggest wuss I know when it comes to movies…) and woke up checking to make sure all my limbs were intact. Why? Impaler,

was the last thing I read before I called it quits. Written by William Harms and illustrated by Matt Timson, It is truly an AMAZING work of art, don’t get me wrong, but it’s so…detailed and realistic…it’s so “what if”. It strongly reminds me of “I Am Legend” just because the Zombie-Vampire-Things can move during the day. Did I say move? What I MEANT was, run super effing fast and use their tentacle-like legs to grab you and pull you back to your doom.

The story is set in New York after the whole place has been nuked. There’s a massive hole in the ground and everything within the radius is in shambles (note to self: if this ever happens, stay away from buildings. Period. There are too many little hiding holes for those freaks to attack from.). The military is attempting a rescue mission. THAT goes well, out of six men that enter the airport, only two come out and one of those guys has hamburger for a shoulder. Meanwhile, a “400” year old man is talking to his friend about defeating the beasts and through his monologue we find that he has been fighting them for centuries. While dying on the battlefield, he calls a priest over to summon an angel who is then destroyed. The man absorbs the angel’s essence and is condemned to a life of neither Heaven nor Hell. His new purpose? To defeat/control the beasts. The artwork in this comic is AMAZING. I HATE gore and guts and blood (I know, I know…typical girl!) but for some reason, this doesn’t bother me. Maybe it’s because I’m so enchanted by the story overall. So…review time!

Creativity of Art: 5/5 The artwork is so balanced. Many comics try to show how gory something is, but it’s too much. It looks fake, or it’s just completely beyond fake and it’s ridiculous. “Impaler” has the perfect blend of realistic and artistic.

Creativity of Writing: 4/5 The Vampire/Zombie thing has been run into the ground lately *grits teeth at the thought of Twilight*, but having a 400 year old man dedicated to saving the world? Pretty awesome. And the fact that you can’t quite place a label on the creatures is a plus, too. Sure, lots of people say they’re Vampires but they possess abilities/anatomy that would make the Cullen clan pee their pants (assuming Vampires can pee). I’m not going to be too harsh on writing because I feel like this story is going somewhere amazing and I’ve only read the first issue.

Casual Read Rating: 5/5 I love bunnies and I can still love this comic. I’m pretty sure it’s one of my all time favorites. So…where the hell did “I love bunnies” apply to this comic? I’m convinced that pretty much anyone (with any variety of personalities/interests) could be pulled in.
