Lessons From Last Night: Livestreaming Doesn't Suck
#TalkNerdyToMeLover's Adam Reisinger
As readers of Talk Nerdy to Me Lover know, livestreaming is a big part of this moment. Site mistress/fearless leader Jen Friel has made it a huge part of her life, broadcasting pretty much everything she can to an audience of friends, lovers and just about anyone that stumbles along (including some kind of annoying 4channers the other night).
I have to admit, while I enjoyed watching Jen's livestreams, I never really got the appeal of being the streamer -- that is, until last night.
As you may have heard (thanks Morgan, for your inadvertent twist of the knife) last night LeBron James announced his decision on where he'll play next season. And for some reason (never really made clear) he did so in Greenwich, CT, or about 90 minutes from where I work. So I decided to go down to Greenwich and livestream the proceedings outside the Boys & Girls Club.
The act of livestreaming made what could have been a really awful night somewhat fun (and had my phone not died right as LeBron's announcement was being made, maybe the livestreaming would have softened the blow a little bit). I had a great time just talking to random people at the event, answering questions from people in the chatroom, posting poll questions and really just sharing the experience with the world.
When I launched the livestream, I figured maybe 20 or 30 people would hop on. Well, apparently LeBron drives numbers, because at my peak I had more than 1,000 viewers. People REALLY wanted to know what was happening in Greenwich, even if LeBron was nowhere in sight.
Now, I still couldn't see myself doing what Jen does and sitting down in front of a camera and just talking to it. I'm not nearly that outgoing (plus, let's be honest, no one wants to see me that close). But if I'm out at an event that people around the world might not be able to get to? Yeah, I'll livestream that.
