@BritneySpears Sets New Twitter Standard... For Now
#TalkNerdytoMeLover's According to Adam
Because of my obsession with Britney Spears, I've been monitoring this for awhile, but thanks to a push from Perez Hilton (@PerezHilton), Britney Spears (@BritneySpears) has become the most-followed person on Twitter, passing Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk). As of this writing -- 5:55 p.m. EDT on May 23 -- Spears leads Kutcher by about 4,500 followers, but she and Kutcher continue to bounce back and forth.
Both of them are within striking range of becoming the first person to reach 5,000,000 followers, which will be an interesting Twitter milestone, but not a huge matter of significance. For what it's worth, Kutcher actually makes more use of Twitter, while Spears tends to leave the tweeting to her management staff. I'm of the belief that there's no "right" way to use Twitter, and I think there are benefits to both of their approaches (also, I follow Britney, but not Ashton, mostly because I'm obsessed with Britney and think everything she does is awesome).
It'll be interesting to see if the mainstream media catches on to this unofficial contest, like they did when Kutcher was pushing to become the first person to hit 1 million followers. Personally, I think it'd be more interesting if they didn't, since I think Twitter has progressed beyond the point of simply being about follower counts. That said, if you want to follow me, and get me up to, oh, say 300 followers, I'd be fine with that.
Oh, and what fun is a Britney post without some music? Enjoy...
