The Novice Nerd puts down the ego & picks up the hustle!
#TalkNerdyToMeLover's Novice Nerd
A recent article by @JenFriel (Put down the ego, pick up the hustle) really resonated with me, because it seems so many nerds, (especially female), have a lot of trouble knowing what they are worth and how to get it.
Yes, in life, you need to know why you’re doing what you’re doing. Yes, you need to know what you’ll do to get it. But you also need to know what you NEED for it to happen. In short, you need to know your bottom line.
Your bottom line doesn’t have to be monetary. You could want experience, recognition, love, confidence, whatever you need. So knowing your bottom line is crucial in every situation and every relationship be it business, personal, sexual, evangelical….
You have to know what you’re worth. And you have to stick to your guns. Use faith and trust in knowing your bottom line. Exercise reason, sure, but once you know your worth, believe in it.
If, like Jen, you need money (or a pay rise), then say it. And mean it. Know how much you need, how much you are worth and stick to it. If you want your friends to be there for you or your boyfriend to treat you better, then tell them. Not all business people are sharks, not all your friends are selfish, and not all guys are assholes. Most of the time, it’s simply that if you don’t choose your bottom line – what YOU want – then the other players will inadvertently choose for you, and you won’t get that pay rise, that movie night, that second date. Seriously, if you won’t stand up for yourself, it’s unlikely anyone else will. And you know why? Because they don’t know your bottom line.
Don’t indulge in recession based fear. If no-one has any money, then how did Apple sell more than 300,000 iPad’s on the first day of release? Don’t believe other peoples fear, their hype. Just believe YOUR hype. And get to know your bottom line.
And if it doesn’t work out - you won’t always get the desired result - then it’s not meant to be – again, if I can use Jen as inspiration, know there are HUNDREDS of opportunities coming to you, and if the current one doesn’t cater to your bottom line, then a better one will. By sticking to your bottom line you’ll be bought to situations where you DO get what you want, and what you need.
