Like #Smallville? Me too: Thoughts on Smallville Season 10
#TalkNerdyToMeLover's Troy Robbins
A little over ten years ago Warner Brothers, owners of DC Comics, hired Tollin/Robbins Productions to create a live-action television series based on one of their characters. They decided to create a series titled Bruce Wayne. The focus of the series was a young and inexperienced Bruce. He would travel around the world and learn everything he needed to learn to fight the injustice that was forced upon him and his parents.
Fortunately Warner Brothers and DC comics decided to resurrect the Batman franchise in the form of a movie and created Batman Begins. Then Tollin/Robbins Productions decided that a young Clark Kent would make for a better series. Smallville was born.
Clark began with only a portion of his powers. As he grew, so did they.
Throughout this series we’ve met younger versions of his parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, Lana Lang, Pete Ross, Lex Luthor, his father Lionel, and a new character, Chloe Sullivan. We’ve also seen the beginnings of the Justice League and the early adventures of Green Arrow, as well as the legacy that began with the Justice Society of America.
The series was created to showcase Clark’s struggles to become the man of steel we all know and love. Unfortunately the series has run its course and now it’s time to see the payoff. Clark already has a secret identity calling himself the Blur, formerly the Red-Blue Blur. Smallville creators figure that Clark wouldn’t get it right the first try so they decided to give him a different appearance and identity. This is a dumb idea considering that Green Arrow got it right the first try?
During the last few seasons Clark has spent one year in college and then immediately took a job in the basement of the Daily Planet as a reporter. He works closely with Lois who is also a young, new, reporter. The two have grown close and developed a relationship similar to the one they have in the comic books. Lois and Clark love each other. They’re competitive reporters. Clark is keeping his identity a secret from Lois who is also in love with the Blur.
Will Smallville producers continue to build up to the Superman we all know and love? Or will the producers simply keep focusing on Clark’s struggle to become a super hero, yet, never gain the symbol status that is the man of tomorrow?
So far, Clark still can’t fly, he’s still not wearing his glasses, no cape, he’s no longer wearing the red and blue colors that made him who he is in the comics, and the producers have yet to explain how no one will recognize him without his glasses as Superman when everyone has seen Clark without his glasses since the first episode.
Perry White is said to appear in the last episode of the season as Martha Kent’s new boyfriend. But will he stick around? Franklin Stern is the new editor-in-chief at the Daily Planet and Lois and Clark mentioned that there has been a revolving door for editor-in-chiefs lately. Maybe that means Perry will walk through the door next season.
Green Arrow has been a great addition to the series, but I feel like its time that someone else joins the show on a regular basis. Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, has taken over the friendship role originally owned by Batman, which is nice. It’d be nice to see someone else, however, in that role by either replacing Oliver, or at the very least, joining him.
Lois Lane: Love her.
Chloe Sullivan: I believe that she’s the one that is going to die at the end of the season.
Lex Luthor needs to return for the final two-part episode of the series. He should be exiting a science lab surrounded by a group of criminals such as, Gorilla Grodd, Solomon Grundy, Icicle, Giganta, and Dark Arrow, for example. As the Injustice League is leaving they’re stopped by Superman, Flash, Cyborg, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Aquaman, aka the Justice League.
However they end the series the producers need to answer the questions and show Clark become the man of steel, even if it’s only for the last episode.
