Glee Clubs -- The New "Cool" In School!

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's Awesome Applesauce: Charles Quevedo

Remember when 30 years ago or so, "glee clubs" in high school were considered the ultimate in dorkiness.  Anybody who was in such a club was committing "social" suicide.  Back then, nobody wanted to join a choir... except the "nerds" and "geeks".  Glee clubbers often had to fear walking down the school's hallway and getting jumped by the football jocks and being given a "swirlie" (being hung upside down, the victim's head in the toilet bowl while it's being flushed).

Well, it's 2010... and glee clubs are now considered the ultimate in "coolness".  Why?  Glee clubs are getting a lot of attention now, thanks to the helping hands of pop culture television shows & films like "Glee", "High School Musical", "American Idol", "Chicago", and "Mama Mia!".  Singing out loud for an audience is considered "unapologetically awesome".  Teenagers that are participating in glee clubs are following the example of "Glee", using popular cult-classic songs and modern-day dance moves in their performances.  These definitely aren't your grandfathers' glee clubs.

"Glee" is a musical comedy-drama show on FOX, focusing on a high school glee club called, "New Directions", at the fictional William McKinley high school.  It's the brainchild of FOX Television creators, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan.  They've created a phenomenon that has captured the hearts of Americans, inspiring real-life high schools to start "glee" programs again after being almost non-existent (having been taken off their school cirriculum long ago).  "Glee" has brought "glee clubs" back to life.

Just when you thought that the only way to get popular in high school would to be the jock who gets the glory on the football field, you can now also be the "big man on campus" by being the person who sings his heart out on stage under the big bright spotlight.  Glee clubs are definitely the new "cool".
