To Remake or Not to Remake: Clash of the Titans

Ah the eternal debate, to remake or not to remake. Clash of the Titans set to release in theaters on April 2nd is just one of many remakes to come out this year including the original boogeyman Freddy Krueger, Nightmare on Elm Street. Look I'm the person who's snobby about these things, can they work and will they work, in my mind no. Rob Zombie and I'll admit this reluctantly did a great job on the Halloween movies definitely adding some depth to the original storyline but I'm not so sure we can top Harry Hamlin's portrayal of Perseus in the original Clash of the Titans. It was the original Sci-Fi period piece, complete with, for that time, state of the art special effects it was a more innocent time then. As moviegoers we were not yet easily impressed by graphics and special effects to us that was new, exciting and a look into the future of cinema it also marked one of the few mainstream accepted Sci-Fi movies. Now of course in 2010 we have become desensitized to special effects I mean after Independence Day everything looked kinda novice so what could Clash offer us that the original did not? Greek mythology for the most part has been rightly portrayed in television and film after all back then people truly believed Gods existed and Medusa was real. Seeing her on the big screen turning men to stone while bringing a bit of brightness to my day I will admit was fascinating, after reading the stories in school and learning about mythology through books I found it amazing to see her serpent like body big demon eyes and slithering snake head moving about on the screen.
I recently picked up Buck Rogers the original television show on Netflix and went through each episode as if it was my first time and I remembered how awesome it was back then to see these things on television. I was young and completely in awe of the robots and futuristic settings they explored and I also had a thing for Erin Gray, but I digress. What would happen if they were to make that into a movie would it still have the same effect it did on me as a kid or would I just be angry that they took a piece of my childhood and tainted it with their big budgets and exploding spaceships. Ah the turmoil a nerd goes through when they see their childhood dreams tarnished by corporate America. Had George Lucas just left Star Wars alone I may not have had that nervous breakdown of enormous proportions after I paid money to see The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith, what a letdown. I like many fans bought the DVDs though to add to my collection but have yet to put them into my DVD player. Can't we all just leave well enough alone, Karate Kid remake, really? Will Smith's son to play Daniel, really? Please someone I beg of you save the entertainment industry from repeating the same storylines over and over again someone, anyone create something new and exciting. Follow the SyFy channels lead and make some original programming like Tin Man and Alice be brave, progressive, original, be the future of cinema like Clash was back in the day. A nerd can dream can't she?
