@JohnCMayer is in deep, deep, doo doo
@JohnCMayer spoke to Playboy this month, and in the article was quoted as dropping the "N" bomb. Yes, that word. The ONE word in the english dictionary that makes me, the white irish chick from Cali SUPREMELY uncomfortable saying.
The incoming tweets right now are just - wow. I honestly have no words ... people are PISSED!!
MAYER: It depends on what I picked up. My two biggest hits are “Your Body Is a Wonderland” and “Daughters.” If you think those songs are pandering, then you’ll think I’m a douche bag. It’s like I come on very strong. I am a very…I’m just very. V-E-R-Y. And if you can’t handle very, then I’m a douche bag. But I think the world needs a little very. That’s why black people love me.
PLAYBOY: Because you’re very?
MAYER: Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n***** pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.’"
PLAYBOY: It is true; a lot of rappers love you. You recorded with Common and Kanye West, played live with Jay-Z.
MAYER: What is being black? It’s making the most of your life, not taking a single moment for granted. Taking something that’s seen as a struggle and making it work for you, or you’ll die inside. Not to say that my struggle is like the collective struggle of black America. But maybe my struggle is similar to one black dude’s.
You can read the article in its entirety here. Every blog posting I've seen in Twitter highlights all sorts of douchey things he said ... but I have to admit, I do understand what he was trying to say. He wasn't intentionally trying to be defamatory, I'm assuming just controversial. Don't get me wrong, I am HOLY HELL uncomfortable with saying that word - in fact, getting me to say it is mission impossible ... There are just too many emotions tied to that word. Too many things have been said, written, and for anyone of ANY color to use that word is flat out wrong. It just needs to be erased from the language - especially in rap songs! Why is it okay for a rapper to blast the "N" word in a hit song, but it's absolutely not okay for someone of a different race to use it? Do only certain people have property of the word? By "owning" the word aren't you essentially giving it more power - which is then used to further repress individuals?! By owning something you are giving it a value. Take away it's value, and the word becomes irrelevant.
I do not think the word should be uttered BY ANYONE AT ANY TIME! It was wrong of John to use the word, but it's equally wrong for rappers, athletes and celebs etc. to promote it.
I don't know, call me crazy, but I'm #Justsayin
You gotta laugh at the fact that he published this in Playboy, and it's causing such a stir. I guess people do read Playboy for the articles ... HAHAH!!
