A #Nerd Reviews: Butterflies, the movie ... not the insect
SOOO!!! Last night I went to the Valley Film Festival's screening of Butterflies ... cue 4sq checkin:
Have you seen it yet?? Here ... watch the trailer ...
Um yeah.
First off, I have been dying to see this film. I love documentaries, particularly examinations of the rising new media culture.
Butterflies takes 6 youtubers and talks about their life outside of the glow from their computer screen. It was fascinating. I genuinely, genuinely, genuinely loved this film. Its objectivity was refreshing. @Filmester did an incredible job of capturing a snapshot of here, these were the kids in 2008, pre the big social media boom - making videos, and shaking down the entertainment industry all from the comfort of their own homes.
These kids were among the first pioneers in what is now the 3rd website in all of the world, and it was amazing to see how different their experiences were. From TV deals, and making some serious bank, to considering going back to being a waiter - the range of emotions was intense. All of them seemed to know they were a part of something big, but could not fully explain it, nor understand how long it was going to last.
I got to talk to @filmester after the screening, and found out that although the film in and of itself leaves you with this feeling of anything is possible with hard work and dedication, the reality of 2 years later has not been kind to the stars of the film; relationships have been tested, and for some the creativity has been lost.
Success effects everyone differently. Some can hang on and enjoy the ride and others just fall right off at the first bump in the road. Certainly new media personalities are not impervious to that fact.
Bottom line is you totally need to go see this movie!!! It's absolutely awesome!!!
You can rent it on YouTube here!
... Oh yeah and then I spent the night playing with puppets ... for reals ...
They were handmade by this dude ... WHOO also likes Eurekas Castle ... and flew in ALL the way from Idaho for the screening. I-da-ho ... no U-da-ho ... hahaha I kid, I kid ...
I liked his puppets so much I took a picture of his shirt.
Check 'em out in action over yonder ...
Good Stuff!! Thanks again so much for the ticket @Filmester!!!
