Enjoying Jennifer Love Hewitt's "Box"
OK, now that I've gotten you to click on my misleading headline let me say this article has nothing to do with bedazzling parts of the body that shouldn't be bedazzled.
Instead, this has to do with comic books (this is a web site about "talking nerdy" after all). Back in November, IDW Publishing released the first issue of "Jennifer Love Hewitt's Music Box", written by Scott Lobdell. I wanted to withhold judgement until a second issue was released, and that issue finally came out this week.
The premise of the stories centers around a music box that seems to be cursed, resulting in whoever owns the box befalling some kind of horrible fate. Then, of course, at the end of each book, the box moves on, waiting to be found by a new owner. While the stories themselves are not necessarily of a sci-fi or fantasy genre (the first one involved some kind of psychic ability, but the second one was a twisted love story), the book on a whole is in the style of "The Twilight Zone" or "The Outer Limits".
Love Hewitt might not seem like the kind of person to spark a series like this, but "Ghost Whisperer" is one of the most successful fantasy-themed network TV series of the last few years. Also, she's leaving the writing duties to Scott Lobdell, one of IDW's best writers (who's done past work on X-Men, Fantastic Four and Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
Plus, unlike most comic book series these days, the issues are standalone, so you don't have to get every single one. Given these tough economic times, that's a nice luxury to have. Even if you don't start buying this on a monthly basis, I'd definitely recommend giving an issue or two a shot.
